The first chapter in this book examines the relationships between absorptive capacity and effective knowledge management through the analysis of quantitative data drawn from managers and employees in residential aged care organizations in Western Australia. The author, Michael Preece, defines absorptive capacity as the ability of an organization to use prior knowledge to recognize the value of new knowledge from external sources, assimilate this new knowledge, and apply it to the benefit of the organization. He provides valuable training in how service organizations go about transforming new knowledge into effective actionable business plans. The second chapter by Mohammad Shamsuddoha provides an application of system dynamics modelling in firms in the poultry industry in Bangladesh. This chapter offers deep knowledge of the \"fifth discipline\" and beyond. Shamsuddoha uses Vensim, a simulation-based software package, to build a simulation model with appropriate equations, formulae, and connectivity to replicate the real-life operation and outcome in a simulation environment. He also provides the in- depth knowledge necessary to learn to truly understand the fifth discipline.

A Generalized Model of Optimal Due-Date Assignment by Linear Programming
1987
A linear-programming model to find the optimal 'CON due-date' is considered for n independent jobs to be processed on a single machine. The term 'CON due-date' stands for constant-allowance due-date, where each job receives exactly the same due-date. The measure of performance considered is a more generalized version of similar problems studied earlier. Duality theory is used to obtain an optimal solution. Some earlier studies are shown to be special cases of the model studied in this paper. Numerical examples are presented for better understanding.

A Hybrid Approach to Multi-objective Linear Optimization
1990
The purpose of this paper is to develop a hybrid and practical man-machine interactive approach to solving linear programmes involving more than one objective function. The approach incorporates all the strengths and avoids the weaknesses of some existing methods. It uses the solution of a two-person zero-sum game with mixed strategies to generate efficient solutions, and then proceeds to modify the feasible region using responses from the decision-maker. The cycle is repeated until a satisfactory solution is found. An example from the literature is solved using the proposed method in order to demonstrate its applicability. A microcomputer implementation of the method is described, with illustrations from actual screen displays. A comparison of the proposed method with 14 other existing methods is also presented.

Decision conferencing is a process for solving strategic decision problems in which the owners of the problem get together for discussions that are facilitated by an analyst, a facilitator, and information technologies that perform multiattribute computer modeling and various sensitivity analyses. The purpose is to create shared understanding and gain commitment to action. The Independent Living Center, a voluntary organization from Western Australia, used the decision conferencing approach to develop its strategic plan. Eleven top executives participated in a decision conference in the planning and decision domain (PADD), a specially designed facility at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia. They identified a future direction quickly and developed a plan for implementation of the strategic plan.
